The controller has at least one laser diode (11) with at least one associated monitor diode (13) for monitoring the optical output of the laser diode and a drive circuit for the laser diode. The drive circuit is a microcontroller (2) that forms part of a closed control loop with the laser and monitor diodes for regulating the optical laser power, whereby the monitor or actual signal output by the monitor diode is compared with a demand signal by the microcontroller to derive a regulated drive signal (8) determining the laser diode power.
