Device for purifying the exhaust gases from an I.C. engine (1) comprises an exhaust gas pipe (2) containing a 3-way catalyst (7) having a catalytic coating (12) that comprises a component (13) which quickly stores oxygen at the start phase temperature and slowly releases it again. An Independent claim is also included for a process for purifying the exhaust gases from an I.C. engine comprising measuring the oxygen amount in the exhaust gas and controlling the fuel/air ratio of the mixture fed to the engine according to a theoretical value for the oxygen amount in the gas when there is a deviation from the theoretical value of the fuel/air ratio.
