The method involves a first step for pre-centering the tool (27) without axial movement by radially feeding it until contact is made and determining the angular position of the worm at which a gap (36) transition starts or ends using an acoustic sensor signal and an angle sensor (18) for the grinding spindle (16). A second step involves fine centering the tool in the gap by axial displacement to contact the tooth edges, stopping axial movement when an acoustic signal threshold is exceeded and deriving the exact center from the contact positions. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the method.
