Variable optical gap producer uses guide tracks on guide rails expanding freely from clamped setting for parallel adjustment of gap jaws assisted by gap adjuster and springs.
The guide tracks (10.1,10.2) are in sectors of a guide rail (7) starting from a fixed clamped position (8) to stand free in the jaw paths, preferably using two rail sectors which extend freely opposite ways from their clamp point (8). The guide tracks are opposed by slides (3.1,3.2) which are fitted out with slide or roll etc guides to which the jaws (2.1,2.2) are fixed. Where the slides have roller guides these encircle the guide tracks. The slides (3.1,3.2) have vee grooves sliding on the guide tracks, using compression or tension springs to set up a pre-clamping force between the slides. Each spring is joined at one end to the stand and at the far end to the slide concerned. Tensile springs (12.1,12.2) are arranged so the first component (F1) of the spring pre-tensions the slides to the guide tracks as against the second spring force component (F2) which pre-clamps the slides to an elliptical adjusting face (4.1,4.2) on an adjuster (4) and in this way sets the interval between the slides in the adjusting direction and so sets the gap width (s). A third spring force component (F3) prevents possible gap jaw twist. Ballbearings (6.1,6.2) minimize the friction between slides and adjuster.
