The method involves mounting shear stress sensors (2) for central rollers and displacement sensors (4) on the surface of or inside the conveyor belt (1) and deriving the peripheral force on the central rollers from the sensor signals as the empty or loaded belt passes over the bearer rollers (5). The values are stored, pre-processed, temporarily stored and read out as an interrogating unit is passed.
