The support has a support end piece (2) fitted at its lower end section to a telescopic support (1) having a cylinder part (1a) and a piston part (1b). A clamp device selectively hinders the movement of the cylinder part in the piston part. A fixable joint is provided at the upper end section of the piston part and is fixed to an upper arm rest (5) by a connecting construction. The upper arm rest can be swivelled to a predetermined angle. The connecting construction has a handle (7), which is adjustable so that it can be comfortably gripped by the patient's hand, to adjust the position of the arm rest without using the patient's other hand.
