Apparatus for biological purification of water comprises reactors with rotating drums (5) and recycling devices (4). Natural tube aerators (6) of diameter greater than 50 mm are arranged around the outer circumference of the drum. A solid bed of polyethylene granules , especially RIGA 2000(TM) covers one half to three quarters of the radius of the drum between the aerators and the shaft of the drum. 20 - 50% of the water is recycled at each step. Until it reaches denitrification water is recycled from the last reactor to the first (anoxic step).
