Scintillator ceramic production, by hot pressing a rare earth oxysulfide powder containing added sulfate and/or sulfite ions, is new. A scintillator ceramic is produced by hot pressing a rare earth oxysulfide powder at -800 deg C under protective gas or vacuum, the powder containing an addition of 0.0001-0.05 mol sulfate and/or sulfite ions per mol sulfide ions of the rare earth oxysulfide powder in the form of a compound R2A or RA, where R = H, Li, Na, K, Cs or NH4 and A = SO4, SO3, HSO4, HSO3 or S2O3, or a compound of a rare earth contained in the rare earth oxysulfide powder.
