A process for reducing the chorine compound content of low molecular isocyanates comprises reaction of the isocyanate or its mixture (I) with at least 0.1 wt.% of a tertiary or quaternary amine group containing anion exchanging organic material (II) for at least 10 minutes at less than 200 deg C followed by separation of (I) from (II). A process for reducing the chorine compound content of low molecular isocyanates comprises reaction of the isocyanate or its mixture (I) with at least 0.1 wt.% of a tertiary and/or quaternary amine group containing, gel forming or macroporous anion exchanging organic material (II), which is free of metal ions water and/or solvents that react with isocyanates for at least 10 minutes at less than 200 deg C followed by separation of (I) from (II) and reaction products optionally by means of filtration, distillation, extraction or other separation technique.
