The device for applying adhesive tape to a package comprises a reel (3) of tape, a folding device (6) which produces a fold in the tape so that its adhesive surfaces face each other, two cutter blades (12) and an application device (14) for applying cut sections of tape to the package. The novelty is that the device incorporates a system (17) for holding the free ends of the tape which consists of gripping jaws (27) which can be moved in the direction (28) in which the tape is moving.
