The machine has lateral transport elements that form an acute, non-zero angle with the transport direction and the vertical extent of all transport elements in the side wall area appears so small from the viewpoint of the side wall camera that an area that is covered in a first zone of the transport area is visible in at least a second zone of the transport area through the inclined position of the transport device. The machine performs automatic optical monitoring for fouling, damage, shape deviation or other characteristics and has a container transport section with transport elements (1a-1c) pressing on both sides of a container (5) for simultaneous transport and rotation of containers whilst the container side walls are optically monitored with one or more cameras with a connected image evaluation device. The lateral transport elements form an acute, non-zero angle with the transport direction and the vertical extent of all transport elements in the side wall area appears so small from the viewpoint of the side wall camera that an area that is covered in a first zone of the transport area is visible in at least a second zone of the transport area through the inclined position of the transport device.
