The starter has an engagement mechanism(20) consisting of an electrically operated reluctance drive with a rotor(21) and stator(24). The drive shaft(13) is torque loaded by the reluctance drive to pre-engage the pinion(16), whereby the rotor(21) of the reluctance drive is installed on the drive shaft and torsionally fixed, and the stator is installed concentrically around the rotor and fixed to the casing. An Independent claim is included for a procedure for control of a starter for internal combustion engines in which a start switch through a control unit sets the reluctance drive in a predetermined direction of rotation and through which the drive shaft by its rotor is turned relative to the shaft(11) of the starter motor armature held by inertia or friction forces.
