Plant running costs management method e.g. for fossil fuel to electric energy conversion plant

A method of monitoring costs arising in running a plant or installation (10) involving conversion of fossil fuel (13) into useful energy (15). The operating state of at least one component (11) of the plant or installation (10) is ascertained via state information. The state information (17) is supplied to a computer model (20) of the plant (10) for determining the actual cost values occurring in one or more components (11) of the plant and for comparison with specifiable desired cost values, with any disagreement between the two then indicated. When the actual cost values are determined, the expenditure on operational resources, in particular the fuel (13), is taken into consideration.
