A short-pulse laser excites nonlinear fluorescence, preferably two-photon fluorescence in a sample. The nonlinear fluorescence signal and a reflection signal and/or a reference signal corresponding to the laser power are detected. The ratio between the fluorescence signal and reflection signal and/or reference signal is used as a control signal for setting the laser power or pulse length. To detect the laser power, laser light is projected onto a monitor diode.
