The protection device has a flexible cable guide on which the slide carriage (6) for the person is secured. The cable (3) is divided into two or more sections (3', 3'') which are connected together through a coupling member (8) over which the slide carriage (6) can travel. The coupling member is set vertically movable and is normally held by each upper section of the guide cable (3) above a loadable or load-supporting lower end position. The cable sections, particularly the upper section can be separately interchanged.
