Right or left-wound screw springs are produced from wire by a winding machine provided with intake rollers (12) delivering wire (14) along a guide axis (34) through a wire guide (16). Two winding apparatus (30,32) are provided, each of which has a slide guide body (36,38), in which slides (40,42) are displaceably arranged so that a winding tool (22) connected to a slide is linearly movably guided out of the wire guide relatively to the wire outlet position. Each winding apparatus has a drive (68,70) for moving the slide and a curve gear (90, 98, 106, 92, 100, 108) controlled by a curve plate (88) for pivoting the slide guide body around a pivot axis (48,50). The curve gears of both winding apparatus have a common curve plate pivotable by a programme-controlled motor.
