The method involves using near infrared reflection spectroscopy to study an unmodified sample (2) of fibrous material. The sample is subjected to the spectroscopy several times in short sequential periods. The result of each examination is evaluated using a neural net. The individual results of the neural net are used to create a whole result, which is used to identify the sample. An Independent claim is included for a device for implementing the method.
