The method involves measuring an ion current signal in at least one combustion chamber of the combustion engine (20) by an ion current probe (25). The gas quality of the currently burnt fuel gas is derived from the position and height of a first and a second maximum and/or the planar integral of the ion current signal curve. The processes of combustion in the combustion chambers are controlled according to the determined gas quality.
