The electromagnetic actuator has 2 spaced electromagnets (2,3), 2 opposing springs (60,63) and a magnetic armature (1) displaced between 2 end positions by operation of the electromagnets against the force of the springs. The spring force characteristic of one or both springs is provided by a measuring device (70,71,80,81), e.g. a pressure sensor, for determining the armature counter-balance position, to allow subsequent adjustment. An Independent claim for a method for calculating the counter-balance position of a magnetic armature for an electromagnetic actuator is also included.
