Recovery of biologically active substances produced as metabolites by microorganisms comprises filtering a culture broth containing the microorganisms and metabolites, extracting the material on the filter with an organic solvent, and passing the filtrate through a chromatography unit to separate the metabolites. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for recovering biologically active substances produced as metabolites by microorganisms, comprising a combination of an extraction-filtration unit and a chromatography unit.
