A magneto-optical recording substrate includes a metal layer (4) between its magnetic reproduction layer (3) and its magnetic recording layer (6). A magneto-optical recording substrate comprises, in succession, starting at the light reception side, a magnetic reproduction layer (3) exhibiting planar magnetization at room temperature and perpendicular magnetization at elevated temperature, a metal layer (4), a dielectric layer (5) and a magnetic recording layer (6) exhibiting perpendicular magnetization. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a similar magneto-optical recording substrate in which the dielectric layer (5) is omitted and the metal layer (4) is = 6 nm thick; (ii) a similar magneto-optical recording substrate in which the metal layer (4) is omitted and the dielectric layer (5) has an increased metal content at the side facing the reproduction layer (3); and (iii) production of the above magneto-optical recording substrate in which the metal layer (4) is formed by sputtering of an aluminum target of = 99.9% purity.
