The printer has a movable carriage (20) for driving and positioning at least one pen (30,32) over a print surface and a carriage positioning system (50) for moving the carriage in strips or swathes over the print surface. The positioning system starts the carriage in a start position for individual strips or swathes. The start position varies to reduce any visual artifacts in the printed product produced by periodic vibrations of the printer. An Independent claim is also included for a method of printing with a printer.
