The switch has first and second spherical electrodes (13,14) arranged with an intermediate gap with a D.C. voltage applied to both electrodes and a third electrode (15) approximately centrally between the spherical electrodes and aligned with them to form spark gaps between the third electrode and each spherical electrode, which is not connected to a voltage source. The switching operation between the spherical electrodes is conducted by producing spark discharges between the first electrode and the central electrode or between the central electrode and the second electrode. An Independent claim is also included for a switching method for a spark gap switch.
