The outer surface of a vacuum holding down device has a surface (103) with a large number of locking openings (113). When a cut sheet covers a region of the surface the openings automatically open beneath the sheet and a vacuum is applied to hold it down. Thus the holding down sheet feeder adjusts itself automatically to the size of print medium. Independent claims are made for an inkjet printer using the method of support for single sheets for printing and a procedure for holding down single sheets in such a printer.
