A laser beam source(10) comprises laser diodes with different wave length producing laser energy in the near IR(infra-red range) and a lens system(20) for collimating the beam prior to a deflector(30) which directs the beam perpendicular to the strip(40) movement. An energy collector(50) and a detector unit(60) extend across the strip width and the detector is capable of recording the different wave lengths produced by the diodes. Preferred Features: The detector unit(60) records energy at both ends of the energy collector(50) and combines the recorded energies of each wavelength.
