To indicate the condition of a protective garment, such as a glove, the yarn (2) for the protective zones has a fibre core (3) covered by a wound fibre mantle (4), both with high resistance to cutting and/or abrasion. The core (3) fibres are all of the same colour, and the mantle (4) fibres are of a different colour for the glove appearance. In the event of a cut and/or abrasion, the core (3) colour is exposed as a contrast to the remainder of the glove. The colour alteration is in inverse proportion to the gravity of the damage to the glove fabric, to show the loss of protection to the wearer. Pref. the high strength fibres are of aramid, polyethylene. carbon, glass, metal and/or high strength industrial fibres.
