Brief description of the ultrasonic measurement of the relative position of two pieces closely spaced

Procedure uses an ultrasonic beam (12) to scan the accessible surfaces (10A,11A) of two objects (10,11) and to detect variations in the reflected signal when the beam passes over the space (14) separating the two. A measurement threshold (SB) is predetermined to indicate the beginning and end of the space (14). Time of flight measurements also permit determination of an angular separation.
