The process enables the production of an alumina of controlled porosity, 0.6 - 20 nm, using an organic surfactant as a structuring agent, which is subsequently eliminated by calcination. The process is effected in three stages comprises: (a) preparation of a precursor by hydrolysis of inorganic Al sources in the presence of at least one surfactant. The Al sources comprise a cation-monomer and cation-oligomer (alone or mixed). The reaction takes place in a mainly aqueous medium of pH 4.5 - 10; (b) the precipitate obtained is air dried at 40 - 110 deg C for 2 - 30 hrs; and (c) the dried precipitate is calcined at 400 - 600 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for the alumina product obtained.
