An alkaline earth metal is produced by rapid heating of compacts in a small diameter horizontal cylindrical vacuum furnace. Calcium or other alkaline earth metal is produced by rapid thorough heating of compacts to about 1350 deg C (in the case of calcium) in a metal-cased horizontal cylindrical vacuum furnace of internal diameter 300-600 mm. Preferred Features: The compacts are produced by pressing a homogeneous mixture of alkaline earth metal oxide and 15-25 wt.% aluminum or silicon shot of less than 3 mm size at a high pressure of about 10000 N/cm2.
