The material is made from popped grains of corn, wheat, rice or sorghum, joined together by strands of a biodegradable or synthetic material running in two perpendicular directions. The strands are in two layers and spaced at intervals corresponding ton the mean diameter of the grains. The strands are coated with a hot-melt adhesive to fasten the grains which, in the case of maize for example, are spread at a rate of 1000 to 3000 grains per sq. m. After popping, the grains can be processed to remove surface projections.
