Method consists of illuminating the container (4) with an incident light cone that originates from a lighting system (10) placed beneath the container, adjusting the light cone width to restrict the illumination to just the external wall portion bearing the raised designs (2) to prevent extraneous reflections and collecting the reflected light with an optical element (24) beneath the container. The optical element is capable of forming a planar image of the container wall. The optical field angle is adjusted according to container geometry and characteristics. An Independent claim is made for a device for reading raised designs on the side of a translucent container, which works within a conveyor belt type production line.
