The vehicle body (5), comprising a base (6), sides (7), front and rear end walls (8, 9) and a top (10) with a loading aperture (11), is fitted with a compacter (40) made up of a first panel (41) hinged to the top of a mobile vertical wall (18), and a second panel (43) hinged to the forward end of the body top (10) adjacent to the aperture. The two panels can be pivoted by power cylinders (52) between an open position in which they form a loading hopper and a closed position for compacting the load with the aid of the mobile wall (18).
