Emission from the ionizing filament and extraction of selected ions are controlled respectively by grilles which are polarized by alternating voltages of the same period T. T is equal to twice the difference ( DELTA tau ) in flying time of two consecutive masses. Vg and Ve are 180 deg out of phase to detect ions with equal mass numbers and zero for ions with unequal mass numbers.
