Non-deformable heat conductive utensil, article or vessel base, e.g. for food cooking vessel or utensil, iron or hot wire cutter, is produced by coating with a thick ceramic-metal composite layer
Heated utensil, article or vessel base production comprises coating with a thick ceramic-metal composite layer. A heated utensil, article or vessel base is produced by coating a preformed base, having mediocre or inadequate thermomechanical properties for durable and effective use, with a 0.2 mm thick composite coating of intimately bonded ceramic and metallic phases, the ceramic phase imparting rigidity and non-deformability and the metallic phase promoting heat conduction. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) vessels, utensils or articles for heating e.g. food, having bases which are made by the above process and which act as integrated and regulated resistance heaters; and (ii) articles such as irons and hot wire cutters which require a non-deformable thermally and/or electrically conductive base for heating with a controlled electrical current, at least part of the article surface being made by the above process. Preferred Features: The coating consists of a mixture of copper or iron and alumina, e.g. containing up to 45 weight % alumina, and is applied by flame, HVOF, HVAF or plasma spray deposition of a powder mixture or composite powder. The metallic phase contains a certain quantity of ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic powder (e.g. iron powder) to ensure compatibility with induction heating. The spray powder may contain a self-lubricating phase such as PTFE, graphite or boron nitride. The applied coating may be machined to obtain a smooth surface and may be covered with a protective and decorative paint or enamel layer.
