Use of a beta 3 adrenergic agonist (I) to inhibit uterine contractions, to have a tocolytic effect to prevent or delay early labor, and/or for the treatment or prophylaxis of dysmenorrhea, is new. Use of a beta 3 adrenergic agonists of formula (I) to inhibit uterine contractions, to have a tocolytic effect to prevent or delay early labor, and/or for the treatment or prophylaxis of dysmenorrhea, is new. E = H, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, phenyl, nitro, halogen or CF3; L = H, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, phenyl, nitro, or halogen; E+L = CH=CH-CH=CH or (CH2)4; G = H, Cl, OH or OG'; and G' = 1-4C alkyl (optionally substituted by OH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkoxy carbonyl, carboxy or 3-7C cycloalkyl), 3-7C cycloalkyl, or 2-4C alkanoyl. Other beta 3 agonists that may be used include those described in EP611 003 (L-755507, L-730355, and L-759574), and those described in WO 95/29159, WO 95/0047, WO 96/04233, EP 764 640, WO 94/29290, EP 659 737, US 5 321 036, WO 94/136938, and WO 93/15041.
