The method involves taking a succession of pictures of adjacent partial zones of a shelf (2) and products on it, over the whole length of the shelf. For each of the products appearing on this picture, a code or a numeric signature (Si,Si+1) characterizing the product is produced. Every signature of a product is compared with reference signatures so as to recognize and to locate every product on the shelf.
