This comprises a free wheel with a driven element (6a) solidly attached to the axle (3) of the hub, and a driving element (6b) surrounding the driven element which is solidly attached to the gear wheels over which the bicycle chain passes. The generator (8) comprises an armature (9) which is attached to rotate with the rear wheel, and an inductor magnet (16) which is attached to the driving element (6b) of the free wheel. The generator acts to produce current when there is relative movement between the rear wheel hub and the driving element which is attached to the gear wheels, thus generating electricity during periods of free-wheeling or descent.
