The close-fitting garment (2), made from a plastic or similar material, covers the torso, back, and preferably the abdomen, pelvis and thighs of the wearer in one piece, has a series of inner pouches (9). The pouches can be fitted with pads (10) of a material with enhanced buoyancy, with the number and dimensions of the pads depending on the height and weight of the wearer. Instead of containing pads, the pouches can be closed and sealed so they can be inflated with an inert gas from a bottle (12) or bicycle pump, or a supple, low-density plastic.
