Metal welding wire is wound around a central axis with axially close wound turns which are divided into many radial layers of turns. At least part of the radial layers are partially radially superposed on each other. The coil has a central cavity, and the coil unwinding end comprises the end of the wire connected to the layer of turns located radially towards the central cavity of the coil The wound metallic wire is subjected to a counter-torsion force of 0.5-1.2 turns, preferably 1 turn, for each wound turn. Independent claims are given for: (a) a cardboard or plastic container for the metal coil, the container having an opening at its end for unwinding the metal wire; (b) an installation for production of a wire coil; and (c) a method of fabricating the wire coil.
