The optical pumping module has an amplifying medium (11) forming a cylindrical bar, supplied with light from at least one light source (24), e.g. a LED and enclosed by a reflector (15) for directing the light through the amplifying medium several times. The reflector is provided as a cylinder with a polygonal base, providing a number of light source images via a kaleidoscope effect, with each light source positioned facing an internal corner edge of the polygonal cylinder.
