Data packet transfer method, for network including bridges between sections, modifying source and destination path fields at same end of packet to extend permissible length

The method is applied to data packets having fields denoting the path taken and the path to be followed, the fields being situated at the same end of the packets and containing information identifying different network bridges. The length of at least a first field is reduced by suppressing part of the information and the length of at least a second field is increased by the addition of information. This allows more complex path information, including an increased number of bridges, to be conveyed. Independent claims are included for: (a) a device for transferring a data packet across a bridge linking at least two parts of a network; (b) a bridge connecting at least two parts of a network and including a data packet transfer device; (c) a packet switching network using such a bridge and one including a data processing device; (d) and a data processing device including a bridge in the form of a printer, server, computer, facsimile, scanner, VTR, (digital) camcorder, decoder, TV receiver, or digital still camera.
