A process for decomposing food waste comprises co-culturing obligate and facultative aerobic bacteria on sterile dry carriers, introducing food waste into a device containing the carriers in a predetermined amount per day for 6 months, and mixing the carriers and waste at regular intervals at 25 to 35 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for a device for decomposing food waste, comprising a receptacle made of thermally insulating material, a fermentation chamber having a waste chute with a sprung holding arm, a hexagonal axle extending across the fermentation chamber and having six agitator blades arranged at an angle of 60 deg (each blade having two auxiliary blades of triangular cross section) and a deodorizing device fitted inside the receptacle and connected to a gas outlet pipe.
