A test piece (3) is contained within a sealed autoclave (20) with a sensor (6) for determination of the force or strain applied to it and electromagnetic measurement sensors (14) for determination of the extension of the test piece. The entire apparatus is contained within the autoclave and the sensors connected directly to the test piece shaft (3c). An Independent claim is made for a procedure for use with the above apparatus.
