After the X-ray examination of an object (2) the attenuated X-ray (FX') is split into individual energy ranges in order to determine the material of the object. The X-ray is detected by a device comprising several pairs of low energy (4) and high energy (7) detectors of identical construction. However, cross-talk occurs between individual energy ranges in the low energy detector (4) and so the type of material can not be unambiguously detected. A second low energy detector (5) is added to absorb the same amount of high energy radiation as detector (4). A low energy signal free of high energy components can then be found by subtracting the signal of detector (5) from the signal of detector (4).
