A method of controlling a radio frequency power amplifier (1) in a digital GSM communications device in which the linearity of the amplifier is adjusted such that during transmission of data from the device the amplifier operates in a non-linear mode, and before and after transmission of data from the device the amplifier operates in a linear mode. This improves the efficiency.
