Motor vehicle with drag reducing flow-influencing means

A motor vehicle 1 with an outer contour over and around which air flows during operation of the vehicle is provided with flow influencing means 4 for reducing drag on the vehicle. The flow influencing means may be operated periodically by means of a drive unit 8,9 and a control unit S so as to introduce disturbances controlled as a function of time into the air flow around the vehicle. The periodic activation of the flow influencing means may be dependent upon changes in speed of the motor vehicle, and is intended to disrupt existing naturally occurring vortex structures in the wake of the vehicle. The flow influencing means may be a movable spoiler (figures 1, 5 to 10), movable air guiding flaps (figures 11,12), or movable diaphragms (figures 13 - 24) which can be expanded and contracted by means of air expulsion and/or suction devices. The diaphragms may be air-permeable or may be removed altogether so that it is the flow of air from the suction/expulsion devices itself which disrupts the air flow around the vehicle.
