A device 1 for separating a mixture of fluids into three phases, gas, lighter liquid and heavier liquid, comprises a supply pipe 12 which is horizontal in use, an inclined pipe 15 having a closed lower end 18, a gas discharge system 20, a discharge system 30 for lighter liquid, and a discharge system 40 for heavier liquid below the bottom level of the supply pipe, wherein the ratio of the length of the supply pipe to its diameter is larger than 10, and the slope of the inclined pipe is such that a stratified flow is maintained in the pipe. The diameter of the supply pipe is such that the velocities of the liquids are below a predetermined value. The gas discharge system is preferably communicates with the supply pipe. The discharge systems for the lighter and heavier liquid optionally include means for controlling the relative volumetric flow rates, such as overflow chambers. The slope of the inclined pipe is preferably between 1{ and 3{. Two or more devices (1a-1e, Fig 2) may be combined in parallel in an installation (Fig 2) for separating large volumes of said mixtures.
