PURPOSE:To provide an automatic memory using range detecting device for automatically detecting and using the using range in an excess area even when a part of memory is defective. CONSTITUTION:This device is constituted of a power supply ON signal generating circuit 7 for holding a power supply at 'L' or 'H' level for a prescribed time at the time of turning on the power supply, a toggle signal generating circuit 1 for inputting an HD signal and generating a toggle signal, an up/down counter part 2 for switching up-counting and down-counting by the toggle signal, an address memory part 9 for storing the address of a defective area in the memory, a shift register part 5 for generating a false noise signal, a selector part 4 for selecting an inputted digital video signal and a signal outputted from the register part 5, a memory part 3 for writing/reading out data, a comparing part 6 for comparing data read out from the memory with data outputted from the register part 5, and a control part 8 for controlling respective parts.
