PURPOSE: To provide a method and device for discriminating kinds of vehicles by which the kind of a vehicle can be automatically discriminated with highly reliability and a high probability by collectively discriminating the kind of the vehicle. ;CONSTITUTION: At the time of discriminating the kind of a vehicle mounted with a sound producing body by detecting acoustic waves produced from the sound producing body when the vehicle passes through a specific area, the absolute difference value of each level dividing value of one measuring sound pattern data S17 at a prescribed time and standard pattern data S19 and the total sum of the absolute values of the pattern data S17 at each time are found. Then a mean value is found by dividing the total sum by the measured number of the pattern data S17 and the kind of the vehicle is discriminated on the basin of the standard pattern data S19 which are coincident with or the most approximate to the mean value.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
