PURPOSE: To provide an optically excited flux meter in which the problem of dead zone is eliminated. ;CONSTITUTION: Preferably, a hemispherical gas cell 7 forms a transparent container for helium or alkaline metal vapor. A coil 29 forms an AC field H1 having multi-directional lines of magnetic force in the container. One or a plurality of lamps 11 containing helium or alkaline metal vapor direct circularly polarized resonant radiations toward the container such that the radiation propagates through the container in multiple directions. One or a plurality of photodetectors 25 detect the radiation transmitted through the gas cell. Multiple directivity of radiation and the AC field H1 ensure that a magnetometer does not pass through a dead zone.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
